Is Our Health Freedom Slipping Away?

by Jan Rosenstreich

It is a proven fact that if you throw a frog into a pot of boiling water, it will jump right out. However, if you place a frog in a pot of water and keep raising the temperature (one degree at a time) this same frog will be cooked by the time the water boils.

This is what is happening to our health freedom. Our rights are slowly being taken away (one by one) and before long we won't have any choices. This is happening on local levels as well as worldwide. On the local level, various states, provinces, municipalities, etc. are in the process of passing licensing laws that govern many alternative healing practices. On the surface, the wording of these laws seem well intentioned, the motivation and practice are questionable. On the worldwide front, the Codex Alimentarius Commission is in the process of taking away your rights to use dietary and vitamin supplements. The two articles that follow will give more information about these threats. Be aware that even if your corner of the world is not yet threatened, these ideas have a habit of rapid duplication and expansion.

The Codex commission has been meeting to establish world standards on various industries including dietary and vitamin supplements. The Codex Commission was formed as part of the G.A.A.T. treaty and its stated purpose is to ensure a level playing field between trading countries. It makes sure that countries do not engage in deliberate discriminatory practices towards any other country. This is a noble idea in theory but leaves a large potential for abuse in practice.

The most damaging proposal is a German proposal This proposal states that no supplement that exceeds the maximum daily allowance can be sold over the counter (it has yet to determine this maximum standard). This would make these supplements prescription drugs that can be regulated and sold at inflated prices. It is not surprising to see how the large German pharmaceutical companies will greatly benefit from this proposal. At an October 1996 conference in Bonn Germany, this proposal advanced even closer to passage. The next conference is scheduled in less than 2 years.

There is a trend for individual countries to start implementing the German proposal even prior to the next Codex Alimentarius Commission meeting. Thus far Germany, Norway, Canada, Australia, and others are in the process of turning many of the current supplements into prescription drugs and limiting the potency of their over-the-counter counterparts. This is just the beginning, expect to see more countries harmonize their laws to follow this proposal and expand this to include herbs and other substances.

This newsletter is distributed worldwide and you need to let YOUR governments know how you feel about YOUR health freedoms before there are none left to protect. It is usually easier to stop a law than repeal one. Staying silent is a signal for government to do whatever it wants - will it act in YOUR best interest or for special interests?
